ELEMENTS OF ART: VALUE

THEORY FOR THE NOTEBOOK

ELEMENTS OF ART: VALUE

This is our next task. You will draw a sphere and also the value scale as you can see in the example.

MATERIALS FOR THIS ACTIVITY: Soft lead pencil (2B, 3B, 6B...)

HB SCALE:  There are two graphite grading scales used to measure the hardness of a pencil’s graphite core as you can see in the image. Most pencil manufacturers outside of the U.S. use this scale, using the letter “H” to indicate a hard pencil. Likewise, a pencil maker might use the letter “B” to designate the blackness of the pencil’s mark, indicating a softer lead. The letter “F” is also used to indicate that the pencil sharpens to a fine point. Historically, pencil makers also use combinations of letters to tell us about the graphite — a pencil marked “HB” is hard and black, a pencil marked “HH” is very hard, and a pencil marked “BBB” is really, really black! Today, however, most pencils using the HB system are designated by a number such as 2B, 4B or 2H to indicate the degree of hardness. For example, a 4B would be softer than a 2B and a 3H harder than an H.

USED OF THE PENCILS ACCORDING TO THEIR LEAD:

TECHNICAL DRAWING: HARD LEAD ("H" AND "F")
ARTISTIC DRAWING: SOFT LEAD ("HB" AND "B")

ZENTANGLE, WHAT IS IT?

Zentagle means ZEN (meditation) + TANGLE (knot, confusion, mess)

From the "Beginning Zentangle" booklet in the Official Kit

Zentangle art is a great way to start out now because (1) it's nearly impossible to mess them up and they can be confidence boosters and (2) it's a good way for me to assess what you already know about the elements and principles and (3) you need something to calm down in this hard period of first term exams.
Right now we are three days into the zentangle unit and you have done a great job.

CHECK THIS WEB PAGE FOR MORE INFO: Zentangle

ACTIVITY FOR CHRISTMAS: "ZENTANGLE PRESENT"

Christmas are around the corner, and I heard the other day on the radio that these holidays are not as benefitial for us as we might think. They cause a lot of stress... Well I guess part of that stress is the getting everything ready and the buying of the presents. So I suggest for this Christmas:

For this activity you will choose an object, I suggested a plain white mug in class (2 € or less in any Chinese shop) and permanent markers (different thikness and colours if you want). Let's zentangle an object! If you prefer to do someother creation, feel free, but make sure you sign your creation and take a picture before giving it as a present. You will print the photo and paste it in your notebook (Activities). If you have difficulties printing it you can send me the photo via email, please attach a comment describing the process and your evaluation of the activity.
